Presenting with flair!

Do you remember the first time you had to present something in front of an audience? Maybe it was at school, at work, at a community event, etc… How did you feel? Were your hands sweating? Was your heartbeat racing? Or maybe you were as cool as a cucumber, like it was just another day.

At ALF this week, our 8th standard girls did their first formal presentations. We first started by watching two YouTube videos on good and bad presentations. Then we had a group and class discussion and through that developed different rules for a formal presentation.  For example, one of our rules was ‘no slouching when presenting’. After this, the students had to create a PowerPoint presentation on a topic of their choice, and then explain it using the projector. The most popular topic was ‘Heroes and Heroines’, with movie actors and actresses such a common subject here in Mumbai, the movie capital of India.

There were definitely a lot of nerves and giggling, as no one wanted to be the first to present. But after the first couple of students, there was a bit more calmness in the students as they shared their projects. Not only are we giving our students opportunities to speak in ALF, but we’ve also have had our students speak in their schools and other functions.

Creating and showing formal presentations is definitely not a priority for students in local Indian schools, but here at ALF we want to develop students who have the confidence and capacity to express themselves!
